Stereotypy or stereotypies are the names given to a group of behaviours which are commonly referred to as ‘stable vices’.  Rather than offensive, they need to be recognised as a coping mechanism induced by frustration and brain dysfunction. Instead of attempting to stop horses from displaying these behaviours, we need to recognise the management practices that cause the horse such stress and ensure we avoid them.
